SENSOR-CMUCAM (Kit) - CMU Camera Module -- US$139.00

Developed by Carnegie Mellon University , the CMUcam is a new low-power sensor for mobile robots which can do several different kinds of on-board, real-time vision processing. The CMUcam uses a serial port and can be directly interfaced to other low-power processors such as PIC chips. Using a CMUcam, it is easy to make a robot head that swivels around to track an object. You can even build a robot that will chase a ball around.

Here is the User Manual .

The kit comes with everything you need to get started with the camera. The software for your PC or Linux machine is available for download on the CMU site and we pre-program the Scenix chip with the most current version of the firmware. This firmware can later be upgraded but requires a programmer for subsequent changes. This kit is shipping with the current version 1.12 of the firmware.

At 17 frames per second, the CMUcam can do the following:

    • track the position and size of a colorful or bright object
    • measure the RGB or YUV statistics of an image region
    • automatically acquire and track the first object it sees
    • physically track using a directly connected servo
    • dump complete image over the serial port
    • dump a bitmap showing the shape of the tracked object

The camera dimensions are 2.25" wide x 1.75" high x 2" deep. The camera kit uses a Omnivision The camera dimensions are 2.25" wide x 1.75" high x 2" deep. The camera kit uses a Omnivision OV6620 single-chip CMOS CIF color digital camera with a 4.0mm , F2.8 lens and IR filter.

SENSOR-CMUCAM2-PLUS - CMU Camera Module 2 PLUS -- US$219.00

The CMUcam2+ consists of a SX52 microcontroller interfaced with a 0V6620 Omnivision CMOS camera that allows high-level data to be extracted from the camera's streaming video. Its primary function is to track and monitor highly contrasting color regions. It can also detect motion, provide color statistics, and transmit image information to a computer for additional processing.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since the board is designed to work with microcontrollers, it has a serial interface using TTL voltage levels (0-5V). When using the CMUcam2+ with an RS-232 serial port, such as on a PC or USB-to-serial adapter, you will need a level-shifter to convert TTL signals to RS-232 signals such as MAX232CPE chip.

When compared with our other CMUcam2 products, the CMUcam2+ has these important differences:

  • Thinner profile
  • 15 0ghter weight
  • Uses only the more capable OV6620 camera*
  • No level-shifter on board for more efficient connection to +5V controllers
  • Minimal packaging: does not include printed manual, AC adapter, or CD-ROM
  • Different connector arrangement with horizontal pins for easier stacking

The CMUcam2+ has the following functionality:

  • Track user-defined colors at up to 50 Frames Per Second (FPS)
  • Track motion using frame differencing at 26 FPS
  • Find the centroid of any tracked data
  • Gather mean color and variance information
  • Gather a 28 bin histogram of each color channel
  • Manipulate horizontally pixel-differenced images
  • Transfer a real-time binary bitmap of the tracked pixels in an image

TURRET-CAM-PLUS-B -- CMU Camera Module PLUS turret (with servos) -- US$129.00

This rugged and universal anodized aluminum turret assembles in minutes, and allows your CMUcam to pan left to right, and up and down for a greater range of visibility. All you have to supply are the standard sized servos.

This turret package featuers a "Sensor Shell", which sits in front of the CMUcam2+ to allow you to mount popular robotic sensors to improve your robots vision capabilities. The turret supports the following sensors:

- CMUCAM2, CMUCAM2+, CMUCAM3

- SRF04, SRF05, SRF08, SRF10 sonars, and TPA81 (Thermopile)

- Sharp GP2D12, GP2D120, GP2D15, GP2D02, GP2D05, GP2Y0A02YK, GP2Y0D02YK, MaxSonar-EZx

The CAM Turret can tilt 45+ degrees up and 45+ degrees down. The pan ability of the turret is only limited to the sweep of your servo, which is typically around 180 degrees.

This turret kit includes all stainless steel hardware, the tilt linkage (to attach it to any standard servo horn and servo), hardware to attach the CMUcam to the turret, and rubber grommets to mount 3 SRF10 sonars. The servo which controls "tilt" is attached using the included double sided servo tape. All that is required for assembly is a small phillips head screwdriver.

This turret package can be configured with or without the sensor shell. The package does not include the sensors or servos.

KIT-VOICE-20s-RECORD -- 20 seconds Voice Recording Module ...US$29.00

The small size is because the IC is in Chip-on-board form. One button is pushed down to record the message. The electric microphone is on the board. The LED turns on during this time. The other button just has to be momentarily pressed to replay the message. A second momentary press during playback will stop the playback. All you have to add is the speaker and 5V power.

The record play time is determined by the 52K resistor. If you change it to 89K you will get 30 seconds but at a reduced sampling rate. Operating current 25mA. Standby current 10 uA.

SENSOR-GYRO-PG-- Micro Piezo Gyro -- US$79.95

This piezo gyro is tiny but very sensitive. The low power requirement and small size are results of the demands placed on gyros in electric RC helicopters and small RC airplanes. This detector can be used any time your robot needs to sense rotation about a single axis. Multiple gyros can be used to determine rotation in more than one axis.

Here is how the gyro works. First, a PWM servo signal is continually sent to the gyro. This same signal is output for use by a servo or microcontroller but the value is adjusted when the gyro is rotated about its axis of measurement. Often this adjusted output is fed into a servo that helps to remedy the rotation being sensed by the gyro.

An example of this is in an RC helicopter where the small rotor in the tail serves as a counter-torque force for the main lifting rotor. When the main rotor changes speed or pitch, different torque is applied to the body of the helicopter and in order for it to continue to point in the same direction, this change in torque needs to be accommodated. This is where the gyro fits in. The gyro compensates for the change in main rotor torque and therefore the body of the helicopter retains its orientation.

The input and output are both 0.1" headers so they are easy to match with connectors for hookup. A wiring harness is included that is compatible with JR, Hitec, and Airtronics Z connectors and will fit Futaba J connectors with minor modifications.

SENSOR-SINGLE-LINE - Single Line Detector...US$35.00

The Single Line Detector is an infrared reflective sensor, that can be attached to a sumo, or other mobile robot. The sensor delivers a stable TTL compatible high or low voltage depending on the shade of the surface it is positioned over. Use two or more sensors to make a custom line following robot.

There is a status LED to make setup or troubleshooting a breeze. The LED is on and the output is LOW when the sensor is positioned over a black or dark surface, or if nothing is there to reflect off of. The LED goes out and the output is HIGH when the sensor is positioned over a white or light surface. The sensor has an 8" connector that can easily plug directly into the digital I/O lines of the OOPic R microcontroller, as well as various other microcontrollers. The circuitry could also be useful as a surface detector to keep your robot from going off the edge of a table, or tumbling down the stairs. This is a time tested rock solid circuit that will perform flawlessly.

The reflective sensor is made from a one piece Infrared LED and detector pair that are directed at the surface below the front of the robot. There is a built in level comparator with an adjustable reference point so you can fine tune the sensor for different light levels and surface conditions. A manual is included with the package.
